CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

I SPUTTERED, STARING at her.

“What?”

Soren dropped Lily’s hand, letting her descend the stairs first. He followed on her heels. Lexi pulled me down after them.

Lily said nothing as we all entered the study. She pointed at the desk, which now was covered with several pieces of paper.

Staring down at them, she hesitantly explained.

“Actually, we are multi-millionaires. Our family owns the town and much of the land around here. Mom and Dad had sold off parcels to some families, but everything else is ours. Up to the boundary we have with Mercer. The town pays us a monthly fee and it doesn’t appear we have an electric bill. We have our own well for water, septic for sewage and we just pay a small amount for Internet and cable. The man that maintains our septic tank is one of the ones who we sold a parcel of land to, for a very good price for him. He does the maintenance for free.”

I grew a little warm when she mentioned the electric bill. Right. The energy that powered our property came directly from the Gate. I could try lying and say there were solar panels somewhere on the land or just let her think that the town had waived that fee for us. But this was my sister. Too much had happened to both of us for me to lie to her. I just needed more time to get used to the fact that Alemos really was alive.

I cleared my throat. “Well, I am glad there’s no chance of us running out of money, I guess. Or that the house, without Alemos, not being livable.”

She shook her head, watching as Soren made his way to the bowl of herbs, his hand diving in deep and swishing around, filling the air with their scent. He seemed to like the scent as much as our mother had.

“Nope.”

“And it explains why Mom never went to work after Dad left.”

“Yep.”

“But where was Dad going all those years he got up and left the house around eight, returning right before dinner, around five-thirty?”

Lily shrugged. “No idea. I think our parents hid a ton of stuff from us.”

I mumbled under my breath. “You have no idea.”

Lily shot me a sharp look, but said nothing. I wasn’t sure if she had heard me, but the tightening of Lexi’s hand in mine meant my mate had.

Lexi said nothing as well. She dropped my hand, moving over to the desk to look at a different stack of papers.

“So your parents owned this land and the house, free and clear. They owned the town, who was giving them some of the tax money… how long was this going on? Did it start with your dad or was it inherited from a grandparent?”

Lily turned to stare at me. I didn’t know. And from the look on her face, she didn’t know either.

Soren interjected. “How long has the Gate been here?”

I exhaled. That one I could answer. Sort-of. “A while. Before my parents, obviously.
